Robert Griffin III injury update: Ravens expect QB (thumb) to return for Week 1

NFL null null

Robert Griffin III should be fully healthy by the start of the regular season.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh on Saturday said he's hopeful the backup quarterback will return by Week 1 after suffering a fractured thumb during practice late last month.

"He won't be able to do anything until that fracture heals, which is a time frame," Harbaugh said, per NFL Media . "I think it was three-four weeks before it even heals and we'll work from there. We anticipate the first week of the season, if all goes well."

It had been reported that Griffin's recovery timeline was 4-8 weeks. However, the team later said they expect him to be fine by the start of the regular season, which lands right in the middle of that estimate.

Griffin, 29, spent three years with the Redskins after being drafted second overall by Washington in 2012, but lost the starting job to Kirk Cousins after suffering numerous injuries. He then ended up playing with the Browns for a season and eventually landed wit夜网论坛h the Ravens after sitting out 2017.

He went 2-for-6 for 21 yards for Baltimore last year.

NFL trade rumors: It would be 'a surprise' if Texans' Jadeveon Clowney isn't dealt

NFL null null

Jadeveon Clowney might not be with the Texans when the season starts.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain reports he would "be surprised" if the Texans don't trade Clowney before the start of the season.

The reason is two-fold: for one, Clowney still has not reported to training camp after the team placed the franchise tag on him this offseason, and secondly, Houston is in need of a left tackle to protect quarterback Deshaun Watson. The 23-year-old was sacked 62 times last season — more than any other quarterback in the NFL.

Houston knew it needed help at the tackle position before the season started and it tried to address the situation in the draft by taking Tytus Howard out of Alabama State in the first round.

However, that selection was widely panned because Howard is seen as a developmental prospect who has not been playing the position for long. The Texans also took Max Scharping out of Northern Illinois in the second round, but clearly the team doesn't believe it has a solution at the[......]

Hall of Fame evaluator Gil Brandt says Bears should try out Carli Lloyd at kicker

NFL null null

USWNT midfielder Carli Lloyd hit a 55-yard field goal at Eagles practice Tuesday and one Hall of Fame evaluator thinks the Bears should give her a real chance to become an NFL kicker.

Gil Brandt was put into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. He was the chief talent scout for the Cowboys from 1960-1988 and was integral to the team's drafting of Roger Staubach, Herschel Walker and Bob Hayes.

What he says matters and he believes the Bears should try out Lloyd.

"Honestly, I don't think it will be long before we see a woman break through this NFL barrier," Brandt wrote on Twitter. "I'd give (Lloyd) an honest tryout if I were, say, the Bears."

The Bears have been looking for a kicker since cutting Cody Parkey soon after he missed a game-winning field goal in the wild-card round against 夜网论坛the Eagles in January. Chicago has had as many as five kickers in camp and hasn't settled on a starter as of yet.

Right now Eddy Pineiro is slated to be the team's placekicker. The team waived Elliott Fry, who was competing with[......]

49ers' Kyle Shanahan defends Jimmy Garoppolo's preseason struggles

NFL null null null null

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan believes Jimmy Garoppolo's preseason struggles will take care of themselves if his franchise quarterback just gets more playing time.

In Garoppolo's first game back from a season-ending ACL injury last September, he went 1-for-6 for zero yards and an interception for a lousy 0.0 passer rating in Monday's 24-15 win over the Broncos. The week before that, he threw five consecutive interceptions in a practice.

“That’s all Jimmy needs is just to play footba夜网论坛ll whether he’s coming back from an injury or not,” Shanahan said (via NBC Sports Bay Area). “We thought we were going to get that last year and unfortunately we didn’t. That was out of everyone’s control.

“When he has played, everyone has seen his ability. And everyone knows he’s in that club [of NFL-quality quarterbacks]. And everyone knows he not only has the ability to be in the NFL, but he’s got the ability to be one of the better ones."

Shanahan explained he wants Garoppolo to play as much as possible in the preseason and into the regular season, inclu[......]

Patriots to release 4-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, report says

NFL null null

Demaryius Thomas will not be playing for the Patriots on opening day.

New England is releasing the wide receiver, according to NFL Network.

Thomas appeared in one game for the Patriots and caught seven passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason.

However, he could find his way back to New England.

Another NFL Network report, which cited unidentified league sources, noted both parties have desire to work out a future deal.

He is still working his way back for a torn Achilles he suffered last season while playing for the Texans.

Now, the four-time Pro Bowl player has been moved by three teams in the last year. First, the Broncos tra夜网论坛ded Thomas to Houston in the middle of the season, then the Texans decided not to re-sign him and the Patriots have decided to part ways, as well.

The Patriots open their season Sept. 8 against the Steelers.

What could be a better way to start the 2019 NFL season than with one of the game's greatest rivalries?

The Bears will welcome Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to Soldier Field for a preview of what could be a hotly contested NFC North battle. While the Vikings will certainly be in the mix for the title as well, the Bears enter 2019 with one of the game's best defenses. And while the Packers have certainly been better in years past, any team led by Rodgers can never be completely counted out.

This game will also be the first for the Packers under new head coach Matt LaFleur. After Mike McCarthy was fired midseason by the Packers in 2018 and Joe Philbin went 2-2 as interim head coach, LaFleur will be given a chance to make his mark on Green Bay in his first opportunity to be an NFL head coach.

NFL null null null

The Patriots apparently weren't the only team willing to give Antonio Brown another chance to play again in the NFL.

Brown's agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN Saturday that the seven-time Pro Bowl receiver "had a lot of options" after the Raiders released him. Rosenhaus also shared details of Brown's one-year deal with the Patriots.

"Antonio had a robust free-agent market and certainly had a lot of options," Rosenhaus said. "But it was hard to compete with New England and that amazing opportunity, that great franchise, and play with one of the all-time greats, Tom Brady, and Bill Belichick."

Rosenhaus said that while several other teams were interested in Brown, one team in particular "was really aggressive" in pursuing the receiver.

The Patriots have not announced the deal with Brown, but Rosenhaus told ESPN the one-year contract is worth up to $15 million and includes a $9 million signing bonus, another $1 million guaranteed and $5 million in incentives.

Rosenhaus said that Brown understands what is expected of him in New England and he's ready to "fit in."

Jets continue to search for an answer at kicker

The Jets continue to search for an answer at kicker.

New York is expected to move on from Kaare Vedvik and will hold a tryout for kickers Tuesday, according to a report from CBS Sports.

The report comes after Vedvik struggled in the Jets' 17-16 Week 1 loss to the Bills, missing an extra point and a 45-yard field goal attempt.

"We just ha夜网论坛ve to get better," Jets coach Adam Gase said after the matchup. "We have to make extra points. We have to make field goals. We can't be losing points in those areas of the field."

New York has had trouble finding a kicker since it let Jason Myers leave and sign with the Seahawks this offseason. Chandler Catanzaro retired after the team's first preseason game and his replacement, Taylor Bertolet, then struggled, leading the team to bring in Vedvik earlier this month.
