Check out the wild anti-NBA rant from Hornets co-owner Felix Sabates

When NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced the league would follow through with its threats to move the all-star game from Charlotte in response to North Carolina’s HB2 law, many within the Hornets organization, including co-owner Michael Jordan, seemed to understand the decision.

Hornets co-owner Felix Sabates, however, is not one of those people. Sabates, who helped found the Hornets in 1987, blasted Silver, the NBA and even the Charlotte City Council for the “short sighted move” (sic). Sabates’ rant (parts of which are reproduced as it was written below) comes from an email response to team president Fred Whitfield, which was obtained by the Charlotte Observer.

“Shame on those responsible for such a short sighted decision to take the NBA All Star away from Charlotte I always thought this was country that ALL peoples not just a few can determine our future,” said in the email, released 10 minutes after the NBA’s announcement.

“Our Mayor opened a can of worms, who knows why? Our city council is the one to blame for our losing the NBA All Star game, none of this would have happened if not for a very few minority forcing our supposed city leaders into creating a problem that never really existed, there will always be another election, they better pray a very few can get them re-elected. …”

Sabates refers to Charlotte’s February city ordinance that expanded rights and protections for its LGBT community. North Carolina’s controversial HB2 was passed in response to the ordinance. As Sporting News’ Sean Gentille reported in April, the law may very well have been the first case since the Civil Rights Era a government took away civil liberties from a group of people.

MORE: Pat McCroy is a bigot, and that’s no ‘P.C. BS’

The state of North Carolina had ample opportunity to repeal the law before the NBA’s action. But Gov. Pat

McCrory has refused to budge, even with the decision already made.
