We put Colin Kaepernick on every NFL team in Madden 21. Here's what happened

NFL E-Sports

Colin Kaepernick has been out of the NFL since 2016, but he’s continued to express his desire to play in the NFL.

Since no real-life teams want to sign him, we thought it’d be interesting to see what would happen if they did. So we loaded up Madden NFL 21 and put Kaepernick on every NFL team. We made him the starting quarterback and simulated the 2020 season for all 32 franchises.

This was made possible thanks to EA Sports putting Kaepernick back in Madden. Kaepernick was out of Madden following the 2016 season as he was not included in the group licensing agreement, which is negotiated through the NFLPA. In other words, Madden lost the rights to his likeness and therefore could not use him in the game. However, leading up to the launch of Madden 21, EA Sports and Kaepernick reached a deal that would allow the video game franchise to use his likeness, as reported by ESPN’s The Undefeated.

So now that Kaepernick is back in Madden, let’s see what he does.

Colin Kaepernick on every NFL team: The rules

Before we dive in to what happened, we should go over the basic rules behind this experiment.

me other things you should know about this. For starters, to add Kaepernick to a team means we must release a player from each team. For this, we just released whoever the backup quarterback was on each respective team.

Another thing to know is Kaepernick is one of the best rushing quarterbacks in Madden, but you won’t see many rushing stats by him. This is because Madden very poorly simulates quarterbacks with rushing abilities and practically never scrambles with them in a simulation game.

Colin Kaepernick on every NFL team: How it was done

If you’re curious about the ins and outs of this experiment then I’ll explain. If not, just continue scrolling to get to the results.

To set this up I simply created an offline franchise and took over as the coach for every NFL team. I did this to ensure there would be no roster moves made by any teams throughout the season. It also allowed me to easily go through each team at the end of the season.

For this experiment, I’d sign Kaepernick to a team at the start of the season, make him the starting quarterback, simulate to the playoffs, record his stats and simulate to the Super Bowl. I’d then back out and re-enter the franchise from the start of the season and simply repeat with each team. A small note, I had to turn salary cap off because some teams were unable to sign Kaepernick due to financial restrictions.

Colin Kaepernick on every NFL team: The results

For the most part, Kaepernick was successful overall as the quarterback for every team. There were obviously some cases where the talent around him made it impossible to find too much success. But there were a few cases where Kaepernick was unable to shine despite having a talented roster.

The full results of this experiment can be viewed below.

We’ll dive deeper into the stats below by going through each team. But for now we’ll just address how Kaepernick did overall.

As you can tell by the chart above, Kaepernick made the playoffs with 13 of the 32 teams. He took four teams to the Super Bowl, winning with two of them (Saints, Texans). The interesting thing is throughout these simulations, the Chiefs and Ravens were almost always in the Super Bowl. However when Kaepernick took over, neither team was able to even make the playoffs.

Overall, Kaepernick averaged 7.8 wins on each team, which is basically average as an 8-8 season would be a .500 year. He didn’t tank too many teams, finishing with five or fewer wins on just four teams (Bengals, Jaguars, Panthers, Vikings).

Kaepernick mostly found success on teams that already have their quarterback situation figured out, such as the Saints and Texans. He was able to improve a few teams, though, such as the Bears, who he led to a 10-win season and a playoff berth.

This one shocked me as it was my first simulation season with Kaepernick and he immediately won NFL MVP. I didn’t expect him to do so well on the Bears considering they’re not loaded with talent like some of the other teams. He led the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns with an insane regular season. He couldn’t get it done in the playoffs, but I’m sure Chicago fans would be happy with a playoff berth. Maybe instead of trading for Nick Foles this season, Chicago should have explored free agency.

One of the worst seasons I simulated with Kaepernick. I thought he might have some sneaky success considering the Bengals have A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd, John Ross and Joe Mixon. But Kaepernick struggled on the Bengals with an ugly 20-19 TD-INT ratio. This was also one of his lower completion percentage seasons out of all of the simulations. Not much else to say here, Kap couldn’t turn the Bengals around in one season.

Kaepernick had a pretty strong season in Buffalo, leading the Bills to an 11-5 record and a trip to the AFC Championship game. It wasn’t quite a Super Bowl, but it was a good season overall. Unfortunately for Kap, Buffalo already has its QB in Josh Allen so it’s highly unlikely this season ever comes true in real life.

Ahead of the 2016 season, the Broncos tried to trade for Colin Kaepernick on the agreement he’d take a dramatic pay cut from $14.3 million to $7 million. He refused, but if he accepted, he may have found some success in Denver. Obviously things would be different now, but in the simulation, Kap showed promise as Denver’s starter, leading the Broncos to a 10-win season and a playoff berth.

I was expecting bigger offensive numbers from Kaepernick in this simulation considering he had Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry to throw to. Instead, he was one of the league’s worst quarterbacks, finishing 26th in passing yards. Some of that, though, has to do with Cleveland’s playbook which features plenty of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Still, in a lot of the simulations, the Browns were able to reach the playoffs. But with Kaepernick, they just missed out.

No playoffs for Kaepernick in Tampa Bay, but he had a good season overall. No losing record, and he finished 6th in the league in passing yards while having Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to throw to. His 67% completion rate is pretty strong as well. Considering the stats, this was probably a fluke simulation and it seems likely Kap would be able to lead this team to the playoffs more often than not if given more simulations.

Kaepernick had a pretty average season taking over in Arizona. He finished one win shy of .500 and was middle-of-the-pack in the primary passing categories. He was unable to reach the playoffs in a tough division facing the 49ers, Seahawks and Rams twice a year.

This was kind of a strange result as Kaepernick helped lead the Chargers to a strong 11-5 record, but didn’t do a whole lot offensively. He was 30th in the league in passing yards, and his 28-11 TD-INT ratio is average at best. Still, it seems Kap did just enough to keep the Chargers winning, which is really all you can ask for in a quarterback.

Coming off of a dominating Super Bowl run, the Chiefs were unable to make the playoffs with Kap in charge. He had a solid 27-6 TD-INT ratio, but had a low yardage output as the sixth-worst starting quarterback.

Dallas made it here seemingly in spite of Kaepernick as he had pretty low numbers overall. He was 30th in passing yards with just 21 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. Even his rushing numbers were lower than most of the simulations I ran. The Cowboys fall just short of the title, losing to the Ravens in overtime of my Super Bowl simulation.

He boasts a strong 36-touchdown season with just 11 interceptions thrown. It’s worth noting the 12-4 record is the best season Kap had with any team.

Just like in that game, the 49ers lost to the Ravens, but I’m sure San Francisco wouldn’t be upset with another Super Bowl appearance.

His 20-14 TD-INT ratio is among the worst of all of his simulated seasons, as well as his 4-12 record. To be fair, Jacksonville isn’t exactly set up for success in 2020.

He has positive numbers overall, and a 7-9 record would be good for the Jets this season.

This is another situation where I feel like Kaepernick would make the playoffs more often than not with continued simulated seasons.

The Patriots’ defense is so strong that Kap just needs to not lose games, which is basically what he did. It didn’t lead to a Super Bowl appearance, but Kap was solid under center with the Patriots.

I went with the first simulation results, but I was curious if I just got a bad sim and did two more just to make sure, and the other two sims came away with similar results. I guess there’s just no replacement for MVP Lamar Jackson in Baltimore.

During the regular season he was good enough to finish as the NFC Offensive Player of the Year, but somehow did not win NFC’s Best Quarterback. He continued his dominance in the postseason, leading the Saints to a Super Bowl victory. Kap didn’t play too well in the Super Bowl, finishing 31-of-36 for 326 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions, but he was given Super Bowl MVP anyways.

Unfortunately Taysom Hill was unwilling to give up No. 7, so Kap didn’t get his legendary jersey number. But holding up the Lombardi probably felt good anyway.

But making up all the work Russell Wilson does on offense is tough to do, and it’s probably why Kap was unable to lead Seattle to a playoff berth.

I was surprised to see they made it to the Super Bowl when I simulated to that point in the season, and even more surprised when they came away as winners. Kap played well in the Super Bowl, finishing 23-of-32 for 227 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. His performance was good enough to win Super Bowl MVP,  the second time he’s won that award during these simulations.

Cam Newton just edged out Kap in the awards as Kaepernick finished second in MVP, AFC Offensive Player of the Year and AFC’s Best QB. Still, a 40-touchdown season is special and 11-5 was one of the better records from Kap throughout these sims.

The Vikings are a pretty good team, but Kaepernick absolutely tanked the season as he took over. This was the worst overall result from the simulations as Kap finished with his worst record. His 13-12 TD-INT ratio was also really bad. The Vikings should just go ahead and stick with Kirk Cousins.
