Knicks could soon land New York native Lamar Odom

Lamar Odom is close to landing a deal with Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks on a trial basis, according to Marc Stein of

Odom, who last played for the Clippers in the 2012-13 season, is expected to join the Knicks in their final two regular season games, with the possibility of playing for the team next season. Odom's deal will have an unguaranteed second year that he could play out if things work out.

As Stein noted, the most important period to determine whether Odom will stick will come this summer, between now and the July 1 open of free agency. The Knicks hope Odom will use that time to get in better shape and become more engaged in the game of basketball.

Odom is recovering from a back injury that ended his last basketball stint in the Spanish league after only two games. Even if the Knicks wanted him to, Odom would not be healthy enough to suit up in the team's season finale if signed Wednesday, Stein wrote.

The Knicks' end game with Odom is to gain a veteran and solid locker room guy

for a full season. Their hope is that he will become a stabilizing force once reuinted with Jackson, Stein reports, citing sources.
