Head2Head: Panthers place emphasis on pass protection

  • NFL null null null null

During Denver’s 24-10 win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50, the Broncos sacked Panthers quarterback Cam Newton six times, hit him 13 times and forced three critical turnovers.

Newton, whose passer rating was 99.4 and accounted for 45 touchdowns during the regular season, had a paltry rating of 55.4 while going 18 of 41 for 265 yards with an interception, two fumbles and zero touchdowns in the Super Bowl.

The 2015 NFL MVP was battered and frustrated by the Broncos, and the Panthers must do a much better job of protecting him in Thursday night's regular-season opener in Denver.

“When you look at what they did and how they did it, it’s all things that we’re anticipating for this game,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera told reporters this week. “If that’s what they did and what they’re intending to do, to me that’s strategy. So I’m not going to address that.”

The Panthers will likely keep their tight ends in to help tackles Michael Oher and Mike Remmers against Denver’s dynamic pass rushers. The Panthers do not want to again leave the tackles out[......]

Kellen Moore to retire from playing, become new Cowboys QB coach

  • NFL null null

Jason Garrett went directly from NFL quarterback to coaching the position when his p夜网论坛laying days ended. History appears ready to repeat itself on Garrett’s staff with the Dallas Cowboys.

A source told Sporting News that Kellen Moore is expected to retire and become the Cowboys’ new quarterbacks coach.

The possibility of Moore making the move was the subject of Cowboys media speculation this past week following the departure of quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson, a move first forecast last Monday by Sporting News. Wilson’s contract is expiring and will not be renewed.

IYER: Why Cowboys failed in 2017

Moore is only 28 in comparison to Garrett, who was 39 when hired as Miami’s quarterbacks coach in 2005 by then-Dolphins head coach Nick Saban. Moore, though, has spent five of his six NFL seasons under the tutelage of Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, dating back to when both began working together with the Detroit Lions in 2012.
That relationship gives Moore intimate knowledge of Linehan’s offensive system.

Moore’s background also gives him a solid foundation to begin a coaching career. His father Tom won four state championships and 21 league titles as head coach at Prosser High School in Washington.

Jason Witten talks 'Monday Night Football': Same game, different approach for former TE

  • NFL 夜网论坛 null

For the first time in 15 years, Jason Witten is not taking the field for the Cowboys in 2018. The future Pro Football Hall of Famer retired from America's Team to be part of ESPN's new broadcast team for the 49th season of "Monday Night Football."

Taking over for Jon Gruden as the telecast's color commentator, Witten has a big microphone to fill. He is joined by new play-by-play voice Joe Tessitore and field-level analyst Booger McFarland.

Before Witten made his MNF debut calling the Rams-Raiders game in Week 1, he talked to Sporting News about the gig and his "other" post-playing job.

SN: What's it like going into Week 1 and not needing to get ready to play in a game?

Witten: I tell you what, my body feels a heck of a lot better. It's certainly a big change as the whole offseason has been different for me. I'm excited; it's a challenge. I've approached this new opportunity much like I did when I was playing. I was of the mindset that I'm going to dive in headfirst, trying to learn and grow, do the job as best as I can.

The competition, the feeling in the locker room — that's real. Not having that is really different, but I love the game. I'm excited to stay around it with new perspective on all the knowledge and experience from playing on Monday night.

After Further Review: Hue Jackson barb proves growing Baker Mayfield not yet grown up

  • null NFL null

The best thing about young quarterbacks handling the pressure of starting early in their careers is that their best performances can be omens to future greatness. On Sunday, most of the rookies who are now starting showed tantalizing glimpses of the future that left teams and onlookers hungry for more.

The worst thing about those same quarterbacks? They’re still … so young. Baker Mayfield proved that, and all the Browns can do is talk themselves into believing it's all part of his well-known swagger.

In this case, it led Mayfield to publicly, verbally blame his ex-coach, Hue Jackson, for one of the few things this season for which he was completely and categorically blameless.

WATCH: Mayfield's best plays from four-TD game

The on-field swagger was great for the Browns: Mayfield had his best game by every conceivable measure, a lights-out first half and four touchdown passes in just over two quarters in a 35-20 win in Cincinnati that ended the Browns' 25-game road winless streak. Clearly it was the culmination of everything he has absorbed since being rushed into action in Week 3, and of the three games under new coach Gregg Williams and new offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens.

Le'Veon Bell's best fits in 2019 free agency: Dolphins, Jets, Raiders make most sense

  • NFL null

Even before Le'Veon Bell chose not to report to the Steelers and sit out the entire 2018 NFL season, one thing was already a near certainty: The 27-year-old running back will play for a different NFL team in 2019.

Bell is set to become an unrestricted free agent this week. While 27 near the older side for his position, he has limited wear after five incomplete regular seasons and will be refreshed after his year away from the field.

NFL FREE AGENCY: Tracking signings, rumors

Bell might not break the bank the way he wants in free agency, but somebody will compensate him with good guaranteed money in relation to the market.

The question: What teams will be willing and able to spend on Bell, and what teams can we rule out? (2019 salary cap projections via Overthecap.com)

Le’Veon Bell free agency 2019: Best fits

    AFC: Dolphins, Jets, Raiders

As well as Frank Gore played in Miami last year, he will hit free agency before his age-36 season. And as talented as Kenyan Drake is, the Dolphins might not trust him enough to give him consistent double-digit touches. Bell could provide Miami a hard-running veteran who could run for chunk yardage and be dynamo in their passing game. And based on social media, we know he doesn't mind Miami.

Cousins: I’m a .500 quarterback, ready for 'next level'

  • NFL null null

Kirk Cousins knows better than anyone that offense doesn't always win games.

While speaking Wednesday at Minnesota's mandatory minicamp, the Vikings quarterback admitted his place in the NFL landscape isn't the strongest and reiterated the need to change that in 2019 if the team hopes to improve its position in the brutal NFC North.

"I think the next level, really, is all about winning," Cou夜网论坛sins told reporters. "I'm pretty much a .500 quarterback in my career so far and I don't think that's where you want to be and that's not why you are brought in or people are excited about you.

"If I don't play well, if I don't have gaudy statistics but we win multiple playoff games this year, the narrative will be I went to the next level and I may not walk off the field every day feeling like I did but if we win, that's the life of a quarterback, you are at the next level. If I have my best year yet in 2018 but we're 8-8, I didn't go to the next level. That's the reality of it."

Cousins had a career season in 2018 as he posted his highest completion percentage (70.1) and his second highest total in passing yards (4,298) while throwing more touchdowns (30) than he has ever had since being drafted by the Redskins in 2012. Still, it was[......]

Hall of Fame evaluator Gil Brandt says Bears should try out Carli Lloyd at kicker

  • NFL null null

USWNT midfielder Carli Lloyd hit a 55-yard field goal at Eagles practice Tuesday and one Hall of Fame evaluator thinks the Bears should give her a real chance to become an NFL kicker.

Gil Brandt was put into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. He was the chief talent scout for the Cowboys from 1960-1988 and was integral to the team's drafting of Roger Staubach, Herschel Walker and Bob Hayes.

What he says matters and he believes the Bears should try out Lloyd.

"Honestly, I don't think it will be long before we see a woman break through this NFL barrier," Brandt wrote on Twitter. "I'd give (Lloyd) an honest tryout if I were, say, the Bears."

The Bears have been looking for a kicker since cutting Cody Parkey soon after he missed a game-winning field goal in the wild-card round against 夜网论坛the Eagles in January. Chicago has had as many as five kickers in camp and hasn't settled on a starter as of yet.
