Teryl Austin implies teams only interviewed him to be head coach because he’s black

  • NFL null null

The NFL’s Rooney Rule requiring every team with a head-coaching vacancy to interview at least one minority candidate for the job has been lauded by many. But Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin questioned the legitimacy of two of his offseason interviews this week.

Austin, who interviewed for four head-coaching jobs in each of the last two offseasons, said Thursday that only two of his interviews this past offseason were “legitimate.”

“Like a legitimate job interview," Austin said, via the Detroit Free Press. "Like I had a legitimate shot at the job."

When asked if he felt he was simply used to fulfill the Rooney Rule requirement, Austin replied: "Take it however you want."

Austin interviewed for the head job with the Giants, Browns, Titans and Dolphins this season. In analyzing the coaching search and hirings of those teams, it’s tough to pinpoint which interviews Austin might have considered to not be legitimate.

Jeff Fisher takes dig at Bruce Arians

  • NFL null null 夜网论坛 null null

Jeff Fisher waited two years to get this off his chest.

With a surprise 17-13 road victory over the Cardinals on Sunday, the coach of the "always 8-8" Rams used his postgame locker room speech to hit back over remarks counterpart Bruce Arians made following a 2014 victory over Fisher.

MARVEZ: The biggest takeaways from Week 4

"I told them, 'This was (the Cardinals') Christmas present," Fisher revealed to NFL.com. "We see them after Christmas (when the Rams host the Cardinals on January 1 at the L.A. Coliseum). This was their Christmas present. We just gave it to them early, OK?’

"Go back and see all the s— Bruce said against us a couple of years ago."

Fisher is referring to a December 2014 Thursday night meeting against Arians and the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Arizona had lost starting quarterback Carson Palmer for the season with a torn ACL. Already picked to lose, backup Drew Stanton was carted off the field during the game and replaced by third stringer Ryan Lindley, yet the Cardinals still came away with a 12-6 win.

Patriots can still get job done against imperfect foes like Buccaneers

  • NFL null null

TAMPA, Fla. — Through five games, the 2017 Patriots haven’t lived up to the high standards set by their predecessors.

This will be a problem in the playoffs — should New England get that far — if the shortcomings aren’t fixed.

    It wasn’t one Thursday night.

Not when the opposition repeatedly self-destructs like the Buccaneers did during the Pats' ugly 19-14 victory at Raymond James Stadium.

GAME CENTER: Patriots-Buccaneers box score, stats

“We survived,” Patriots wide r夜网论坛eceiver Danny Amendola said afterward with a smile on his face. “There’s definitely room for improvement.”

Teams don’t have to play the proverbial “perfect game” to beat these Patriots like when Bill Belichick’s machine is truly humming. The Chiefs and Panthers already have proven that, sending New England to Florida with the possibility of its first 2-3 start since 2001.

But as history continues to show — and exemplified by Bucs kicker Nick Folk’s three missed field goal attempts — you still can’t make as many mistakes against New England as Tampa Bay did and have a realistic chance of winning.

Especially if Tom Brady manages to remain upright.

That’s not a given over the rest of the season. Brady is already nursing a sore left (non-throwing) shoulder, according[......]

Carson Palmer goes down, and Cardinals' run of contention goes with him

  • NFL null null

The Cardinals tried to wring one more year out of Carson Palmer, and with him, one more run at a Super Bowl.

They can stop running now, and they start retooling.

It's been a heck of a five-year stretch, but on Sunday in London, the window closed on the Cardinals, the Palmer era and maybe the Bruce Arians era. At the very least, the time has arrived for Arians, general manager Steve Keim and the whole organization to recognize that whatever comes next, another quarterback will be part of it.

    MORE: Week 7 NFL scoreboard

The Cardinals have seen this movie before, and Palmer was three years younger when he last filled this role. His 2014 season was gutted by serious injury. Arians plugged in Drew Stanton, and they survived until right before the playoffs, when buckled in the face of Stanton’s own injury.

That was paradise compared to what they're dealing with now.

Palmer is now staring down the barrel of his 38th birthday and is expected to be out at least eight weeks with a broken arm. Stanton, the replacement again, is older, too. So is Larry Fitzgerald. The defense isn't what it was back then. David Johnson is out injured, too. The adrenaline of Adrian Peterson’s arrival either disappeared or was lost in customs while crossi[......]

Skycam view that saved Patriots-Falcons telecast not expected to become the norm

  • NFL null

Who says all technology is bad? NBC Sports' Skycam technology saved the day during the network's Week 7 telecast of Patriots-Falcons on "Sunday Night Football."

A thick fog settled over Gillette Stadium during the second half of the Patriots' 23-7 win Sunday night, rendering the usual high, sideline TV angle used by NFL broadcasts virtually useless. Thinking quickly, NBC decided to show the game mostly through its Skycam, the remote-controlled camera system that swoops in behind players via wires strung across the playing field.

The video-game like view turned out to be a new and cool experience for the TV audience.

The fog got so bad, NBC play-by-play annou夜网论坛ncer Al Michaels had to turn away from the field and call the action off TV monitors.

"I could see the field minimally tonight," Michaels said after the game. "I could see what the formations were,[......]

Breaking down new-look Titans: How do Dion Lewis, Malcolm Butler fit?

  • NFL null

For a team that just ended a nine-year playoff drought, the Titans have made a lot of changes for 2018, all the way down to their new uniforms.

A 9-7 record and a playoff victory were not enough to save head coach Mike Mularkey. Enter his replacement, Mike Vrabel, with Matt LaFleur succeeding Terry Robiskie as offensive coordinator and Dean Pees taking the reins of the 3-4 defense from Dick LeBeau.

But even with a winning record, Tennessee limped to an AFC wild-card berth. That prompted general manager Jon Robinson to upgrade the veteran talent at key spots and draft more for immediate impact.

From the fresh approach with their promising quarterback to their updated jerseys, here are the key adjustments for the 2018 Titans.

    Quarterback

Going into his critical fourth season, Marcus Mariota is working with his third head coach and third offensive coordinator. The Titans needed to shatter the "exotic smashmouth" of Mularkey and let Mariota loose as a downfield passer under LaFleur, who did wonders with Jared Goff in Los Angeles.

LaFleur comes from West Coast principles, but his imprint on Goff, who averaged 8.0 yards per pass attempt, was tied to stretching the field. LaFleur also will devise the best ways to take advantage of Mariota's special athleticism. Thanks to the Titans' established running game, Mariota is in a[......]

QBs with most to prove: Pressure's on for Cousins, Prescott, others in 2018

  • NFL null null

Pressure makes diamonds. It also bursts pipes.

NFL quarterbacks know a thing or two about pressure both on and off the field. The burden on a QB’s shoulder pads is arguably the greatest for any single position in American sports. QB greatness is ultimately defined by championships, but a lot more goes into it than just numbers and accolades.

That said, here are the nine NFL quarterbacks with the most to prove in 2018.

    (Dis)Honorable mentions

    — Joe Flacco: (2017 stats: 16 games/16 starts, 18 TDs, 13 INT, 3,141 yards, 9-7 record)

The writing is on the wall for Flacco, and in big, bold letters, it says, “Lamar Jackson, haha.” Flacco’s mega-contract in Baltimore has not entirely paid for itself, given his general blah-ness as a quarterback since winning the Super Bowl; a 38-36 record and 98 touchdowns to 74 interceptions in the five years since.

At this stage in Flacco’s career, everyone knows who he is as a quarterback. His team knows, too, hence the Jackson pick. If Flacco is to set himself up for a new team in 2019, he needs to show flashes of good Flacco, not bad Flacco.

    — Eli Manning: (2017 stats: 15 games/15 starts, 19 TDs, 13 INT, 3,468 yards. 3-12 record)

Former Raider Martavis Bryant applying for NFL reinstatement, report says

  • NFL null null null

Martavis Bryant wants back into the NFL.

The former Raiders wide receiver was suspended by the league indefinitely in December 2018 but is now applying for reinstatement, according to a report from ESPN.

The 27-year-old has been working with both the NFL and NFL Players Association on the steps he needs to take in order to address mental health issues, which include therapists and ADHD treatments, the report noted.

Bryant has been suspended three times in the last four years for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. His latest suspension came as a result of him breaking the terms of a conditional reinstatement from April 2017.

He was a fourth-round pick in 2014 and spent three seasons with the Steelers before playing just eight games with the Raiders during the 2018-19 season.

Robert Griffin III injury update: Ravens expect QB (thumb) to return for Week 1

  • NFL null null

Robert Griffin III should be fully healthy by the start of the regular season.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh on Saturday said he's hopeful the backup quarterback will return by Week 1 after suffering a fractured thumb during practice late last month.

"He won't be able to do anything until that fracture heals, which is a time frame," Harbaugh said, per NFL Media . "I think it was three-four weeks before it even heals and we'll work from there. We anticipate the first week of the season, if all goes well."

It had been reported that Griffin's recovery timeline was 4-8 weeks. However, the team later said they expect him to be fine by the start of the regular season, which lands right in the middle of that estimate.

Griffin, 29, spent three years with the Redskins after being drafted second overall by Washington in 2012, but lost the starting job to Kirk Cousins after suffering numerous injuries. He then ended up playing with the Browns for a season and eventually landed wit夜网论坛h the Ravens after sitting out 2017.

He went 2-for-6 for 21 yards for Baltimore last year.
